Top Ten Principles To Save Yourself in Any Communication

By Bernard Corrigan, M.A.

- Pay attention. The more you really listen the more you will be really heard.

-The other’s frustrations are not about you. You are not the center of his/her universe.

- What is your role in what is going on? You have one!

- We are each equal - despite any feelings you may have to the contrary.

- Be kind and respectful or be quiet. Yes, all of the time.

- Tells it like it is, kindly, and let the chips fall  where they may. Let go of your agenda for any particular outcome and trust the process.

- Be committed to win/win. If the other loses, you loose.

- Eliminate blame from your heart, mind, and voice. Now…and now…and now.

- You are exactly 100% responsible for you, 50% responsible for your relationship, and 0% responsible for the other. Think about it.

- Honor the other and stay true to yourself. We’re all bozos on this bus together.

- (What can I say) Remember: “In the beginning was the Word...” Words create. Pay attention to every word coming out of your mind and mouth – the other person does!
